Mystery Science: Cool Tool Award – Science Solution 
Mystery Science, which joined the family of Discovery Education services in 2020, provides K-5 educators with simple-to-use, open-and-go, hands-on lessons that inspire students to love science. Each lesson begins by posing a question commonly asked by young students, followed by a series of brief videos and prompts to guide class discussion. The lesson concludes with a hands-on activity designed to bring learning to life.

Taking place annually in April, National Financial Capability Month was founded by the National Endowment for Financial Education (NEFE) and is produced by the Jump$tart Coalition. To support financial literacy education during this observance and throughout the year, Discovery Education offers educators, students, and families a new collection of resources that can be used in any learning environment. The following resources are available for users of the award-winning Discovery Education Experience K-12 learning platform:  

• In this DE Original episode – NBA and WNBA Game Changers: Financial Literacy – students practice good money habits by exploring the ways financial literacy skills can be applied every day to achieve their goals. Former NBA athlete, successful businessman, and community all-star Devean George shares how making responsible decisions with money has been one of his building blocks to success. 
• On the Fixies Channel, a comical misadventure series for students in grades K-5, students meet Tom Thomas as he discovers the world, including how much money is in his piggy bank. 
• The Cheddar K-12 Channel explores, examines, and explains answers to the questions students are curious about related to science, business, and technological innovations. In the channel, students in grades 6-12 can follow the journeys of jobseekers, find answers to big economic questions, and discover business briefings. 

In addition, users of the award-winning Mystery Science service can turn to the “How is Money Made?” episode. Mystery Science by Discovery Education is an engaging standards-aligned science curriculum for grades K-5 designed to help students stay curious. In this collection of 45-minute engineering lessons, Mystery Guides lead no prep, open-and-go lessons with step-by-step hands-on activities exploring scientific phenomena using common classroom items.

Located in Klamath County’s biggest city, the Klamath Falls City Schools consists of six sites including four elementary schools serving students Pre-K through grade 5, one middle school serving students in grades 6 through 8, and one high school for students grades 9 through 12. The district also has an alternative high school and a home learning academy for grades 1 through 12. In addition, the district has an early childhood development center and an early childhood intervention program. 

Klamath Falls City Schools’ Offices of Elementary and Secondary Education seek to provide instructional programs at all sites that prepare students for post-secondary success and college and skilled careers. To support the creation of high-quality learning experiences in high school science classrooms that demonstrate how science is practiced in the real world, the district sought a suite of flexible, simple-to-use digital resources aligned to the 2022 Oregon Science standards. Following a thorough review of viable solutions, the district selected Discovery Education’s Science Techbook for Oregon and Pivot Interactives for classroom use.  

Delivered through Discovery Education Experience, the company’s K-12 learning platform, Science Techbook for Oregon is a K-12 core curriculum that includes engaging digital resources, print student textbooks, hands-on activity kits, virtual investigations, and custom professional learning. Through its digital, print, and blended options, Science Techbook for Oregon delivers a wide range of high-quality resources that support students as they discover how science is practiced in the real world while focusing on deeper understanding and application of grade-appropriate science content. Recently, Discovery Education’s Science Techbook was certified as meeting the rigorous, evidence-based ESSA Tier III standards as set forth in the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). 

Pivot Interactives makes teaching science with active learning and scientific phenomena engaging and easy. The platform provides users with more than 10,000 authentic, interactive video-based science interactives crafted by Pivot’s expert curriculum team and teacher community. These resources, tied to state and national standards, are infused with research-based teaching practices and are simple to integrate throughout the instructional cycle.    

Pivot’s activities offer opportunities for interactive learning, where students explore and learn for themselves. The service’s built-in tools—including IRIS, a first-of-its-kind color and light gauge—make for quick and accurate measurements. A unique interface allows students to change what happens in the video and see how that change affects the outcome. Easy-to-follow instructions guide students through data collection, measurement, data analysis, and interpretation, while feedback provided by both open-ended and auto-graded questions reinforce correct ideas.  

Science Techbook for Oregon and Pivot Interactives are the latest Discovery Education products to be adopted by KFCSD. Currently, Discovery Education Experience, Mystery Science, and DreamBox Math are used in district classrooms.

This unique virtual field trip will take participating students behind the scenes of the LEED Gold-certified facilities of the Golden State Warriors and the Orlando Magic. During these tours, students will learn how these eco-friendly buildings and the technologies within are enhancing the lives of the teams’ neighbors in San Francisco and in downtown Orlando. Then, students will be transported to the NBA headquarters in New York City to meet some of the amazing individuals behind the League’s efforts to support NBA arenas across the league towards a cleaner and more sustainable future. In addition, students on this virtual field trip will meet Orlando Magic Forward Franz Wagner, who will share what he is doing to protect the environment for future generations. Accompanying resources designed for use before, during, and after the VFT help educators integrate this event into classroom instruction.
